RATING: 4 ★★★★✩ Excellent!
It's been a few weeks since Elena was put to rest in the tomb. Everything seems to be looking up - Damon has taken Alaric to Europe to help him grieve, while also keeping his own mind off of missing Elena; Bonnie is babysitting them both; things are a bit weird between Stefan and Caroline, but they agree to be friends until she's ready for more; and Matt is about to graduate and be deputized. But while everything looks like it's going to be good, a failed assassination attempt on the Heretics creates a war between the two groups. Drastic measures are taken, but it is all for nothing when Damon and Bonnie return home and want to take the town back.
The situation with the Heretics is very volatile. There are so many factors that brought about the evacuation of the town. But Damon and Bonnie killing Lily's eldest Malcolm brought everything to where it is now. Enzo's role in Caroline's capture was not something that I expected. He seemed to at least care a little about Caroline, but then he chose to be on Lily's side.
Things seemed to be going south between Bonnie and Damon because of the situation with Elena. But toward the end of the episode, they have a bit of a heart-to-heart that I thought was really sweet. The relationship that Bonnie and Damon have is a very interesting one, if not heartwarming. They could become a very deadly team, as witnessed by their team-up against Malcolm.
What Alaric is up to is also very interesting. He has this stone, which it appears Lily is looking for, and he wants to find a way to bring Jo back to life. He's even paying the Medical Examiner to keep her body in the morgue longer than is legal. I'm interested in what this stone is for, how it works, and why Lily wants it.
I was very excited to see Caroline finally give in to her feelings for Stefan. The tension building between them was insane.
What I'm really interested in is the events that are taking place 3 years in the future. What caused Damon to go to sleep and not want to be woken up until Elena was awake? Who is after Stefan? Who is "she?" It's all very mysterious, but the wound pattern is the same one that Lily's Heretic Beau has on his neck.
