RATING: 5 ★★★★★ Extraordinary!

The Heretics have killed 10 people since the evacuation. Caroline has been strung up and tortured. Alaric tells Bonnie about the Phoenix Stone, but when she feels for it's magic disturbing visions of death accompany it. Lily has taken the two people Damon and Stefan care about most. Matt had to die so that Damon and Stefan can get into the Salvatore House. Valerie casts a spell on Caroline, making her skin like vervain. The victims in the Phoenix Stone visions have X-shaped wounds. Caroline's rescue attempt fails. Lily banishes Damon from Mystic Falls for good. Alaric tests the Phoenix Stone with surprising results. Enzo reveals his reasons for choosing Lily's side. And Nora reveals to Caroline Valerie's reasons for what she did to her.

This whole business with the Phoenix Stone is very interesting, especially when it looks like the X-shaped wounds we've been seeing are somehow involved. Alaric is so focused on reviving Jo, that he's not thinking of Bonnie's warning and the possible consequences. The fact that it looks like the Stone is somehow involved with death and torture can't mean anything good.

Lily is trying to put Damon and Stefan at odds with each other, and taking Caroline and Elena is just part of the plan. But Damon conspires with Stefan to use Lily's plan against her. They'll appear to be against each other, meanwhile Damon will go out and look for the missing Heretic to use as a bargaining ship to get Caroline and Elena back. While it seems like Damon and Stefan are always at odds, they have a pretty strong bond that I don't think Mommy Dearest could break. They always seem more likely to work together against their enemies, than allow said enemies to separate them. As evidenced by Damon's plan.

But it does look like the Heretics are trying to get Caroline against Stefan. Nora shows Caroline one of Stefan's journals that Valerie always keeps with her. She wants Caroline to know that real reason Valerie put the vervain skin spell on her. She directs Caroline to the entry for July 15th, 1863. It looks like Stefan had met Valerie in 1863 and was quite enamoured with her. The question is whether Caroline is going to let this affect her feelings for Stefan.

I'm really enjoying the scenes from 3 years into the future. This time we're taken to Dallas, Texas where Caroline is the director of KQBC News. Her "fiance" calls and wants to schedule a trip back to Mystic Falls before the wedding. Caroline states that he knows they can't go back there. At the end of this episode, we're shown the end of the new day and Caroline has received another call, this time from Stefan and it sounds urgent. She wants nothing to do with Stefan, though. When she turns her back on her assistant, he's killed and when she turns back around, Caroline is staked. What all this mean, I have no idea. But I'm interested in knowing who the "fiance" is and why Caroline wants nothing to do with Stefan. And is she dead or just incapacitated.
